What is INTELLIBOOST and how does it work?
The INTELLIBOOST feature is a very useful one that we at RUGGED GEEK are quite proud of.
The intent behind this safety feature is to make jump starting safer, easier and to also protect the jump starter, to ensure a long life.
Jump Starter/Booster packs without this feature will simply send power to the cables regardless of what those cables are hooked to.
With the INTELLIBOOST cables on the RUGGED GEEK jump starters, the cables can be touched together and they won't spark.
When you first plug the cables into the jump starter, the light on them will alternate red/green.
Once you connect the cables to a battery on a vehicle that needs boosting, it will check to ensure the cables are connected to the right polarity (red to positive, black to negative).
If hooked up in reverse it will simply beep to let you know that this is not correct. It will then ensure the draw from the vehicle is proper. Assuming the INTELLIBOOST is hooked up properly, the light will turn solid green and you are ready to start your car.
The best process to use here is to plug the INTELLIBOOST cables into the jump starter and then connect them to your vehicle. Alternatively, you can also connect the cables to your vehicle first and then plug it in to your jump starter. Either way will work.
Turn the vehicle key to "ACC" accessory (that allows the INTELLIBOOST cables to ensure the draw is proper and there are no shorts), the light will go green and then start the vehicle. Or simply push the START button in newer vehicles.
One huge plus with these cables is that once the vehicle starts, the cables will detect the surge in power going back to the battery (from the vehicle's charging system) and will stop power from going back into the booster pack.
This is a strong safety feature as many inferior jump starter/booster packs do not have this protection. With those, if you are not quick to disconnect the pack from the battery after the vehicle starts, it could seriously damage the pack or worse.

What are the differences between the 3 variants of the RG1000 ?
The RG1000 is available in 3 variations with different accessories and charging methods.

I can’t get the green light to come on when trying to boost my vehicle, what’s wrong?
The green light on the INTELLIBOOST cables turns solid green to indicate that the jump starter is properly connected to a vehicle and is ready to boost.
When the green light is on, it means power is flowing from the jump starter to the vehicle and you can go ahead and start the vehicle.
The green light comes on when the INTELLIBOOST senses a draw from the vehicle's electrical system.
In most boosting scenarios, this green light will come on when you first connect the jump starter to the vehicle battery. If it does not, don’t worry, just go ahead and start the vehicle.
As soon as you turn the key/press the button to start it, INTELLIBOOST will sense the draw from the starter and send power to get you going.
My vehicle doesn’t have an accessory mode, how do I boost?
Simply connect the INTELIBOOST cables to the vehicle needing boost and turn the key/press the start button.
Accessory mode is not required to jump start. The only advantage with having an accessory mode is that you can turn it to accessory and have the green light on the INTELLIBOOST cables light up. This will tell you that the connection is proper before attempting to start your vehicle.
Without seeing this green light, you are still able to start your vehicle, the light will go green as soon as it senses a draw from the starter and power will flow as needed.
Will this really boost my vehicle?
People are skeptical when they first see the physical size of the RUGGED GEEK jump starters and how small they really are.
Then when it is used to start their vehicle, they are a believer and they want to know where to buy one.
The RG1000 will start up to a 7.0L Gas engine and up to a 3.5L Diesel engine, however, we always get stories of people starting even more powerful vehicles.
Can the negative cable be attached to a vehicle grounding bolt rather than to the battery's negative post?
Yes, the negative (black) clamp does not need to be connected directly to the vehicle battery, a grounding bolt or other solid ground connection will work just as good.
Will the RG1000 work with push-button start vehicles?
Yes it will work with push-button start vehicles. Once everything is connected properly then simply push the start button to start the vehicle.
My vehicle has an AGM battery, will the RG1000 or RG2000 still be able to boost it?Yes, this will work to boost a vehicle using AGM batteries. Many new vehicles are equipped with AGM batteries as they tend to hold a charge longer, are more resistant to damage from vibration and require less maintenance among other benefits. That said, they are still designed for use on a 12V vehicle electrical system and when they are dead and your vehicle won’t start, this is what’s important. The RG1000 can boost any vehicle with a 12V electrical system regardless of the type of battery used.
Is there a way to override the INTELLIBOOST feature if my vehicle is hard to start?
In rare circumstances, the INTELLIBOOST may not allow power to flow when needed. This could happen for a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to:
1) A defective battery (bad cell, short, sulfated, etc)
2) Poor clamp connection: Either the red positive or black negative cable are not solidly connected to the vehicle, possibly there is corrosion on the battery terminals or other factors causing this. Wiggle the cables to ensure this is not the case and a proper connection is established.
3) A short circuit or other issue causing abnormal draw from the vehicle.
If you are confident that you have eliminated any of the issues mentioned above and would like to force power from the jump starter to the vehicle, you can override the key INTELLIBOOST safety features by holding down the Override button for 8 seconds until you hear a beep and the light on the other side goes green.
Please note that using the override feature comes with risks, as power is flowing as soon as it is activated. It is important you are aware and willing to accept the risks before using this feature.
How many times can I boost a vehicle on 1 single charge?
This will depend on certain factors, like the size of the engine and the mechanical condition of the engine, the temperature outside and the condition of the vehicle battery you are boosting.
As an example, you should get 20+ jump starts on a Honda Civic on 1 single charge.
Do I need to immediately disconnect the cables once the vehicle starts?
Once your vehicle requiring a boost is started, there is no need to quickly run and disconnect the cables.
The INTELLIBOOST cables will stop power from flowing back into the jump starter, therefore providing a safe environment for you, the jump starter and your vehicle.
Can I test my jump starter on a fully charged battery?
The light on the INTELLIBOOST cables will not turn green if you connect it to a fully charged battery. This is for safety reasons, because if the voltage on the battery that you are connecting it to is higher than the voltage of the jump starter, then power would flow back into the unit. If you want to test your jump starter but don't have access to a vehicle with a dead or low battery, the best option is to disconnect the red "+" positive terminal from the battery and connect the jump starter cables directly to the battery wire, bypassing the vehicle battery completely and allowing you to start it right up.
Will the RG1000 start a vehicle with no battery in it?
Yes or No. Depending on the vehicle. Certain vehicles will not allow the vehicle to start without the physical presence of a battery.
Is this only a jump starter?
If it was only a jump starter it would be a very valuable, money-saving emergency tool.
But there is so much more.
It is a multi-purpose tool that should be in every vehicle for emergency situations.
You can use it to safely jumpstart your car, truck, van, motorcycle, boat, SUV, ATV, UTV or any other 12V systems.
In addition to this feature, it has dual INTELLI-USB charging ports to charge your smart phones, tablets, portable GPS, GoPro cameras, Android and iOS devices.
Also there is a dedicated laptop charging port and an extremely bright, 3-mode, LED flashlight. (Steady ON, SOS and Strobe). All the vital info is displayed on a bright and clear LED screen. No more guessing how much charge you have remaining.
Do you have any tips & tricks for jump starting a vehicle?
While it is possible to start most vehicles when the jump starter has a charge below 70%, a more powerful boost is available at higher charge levels. We recommend boosting with a charge level as close to 100% as possible.
Most engines should start within less than 3 seconds. Do not crank for more than 5 seconds continuously, as you may cause damage or overheating to the jump starter and/or the INTELLIBOOST cables.
If your vehicle fails to start or turn over, please ensure that the light on the INTELLIBOOST cables is green (indicating "READY TO BOOST") before re-attempting to start your vehicle. If the light is red and/or you hear a beeping sound, that indicates a failed connection. A possible cause of this is reverse polarity. Please ensure that the clamps are securely attached to their corresponding battery terminals (red to positive, black to negative).
If the light is continuously flashing red/green (detecting a safe connection), power will not flow. This could be caused by a number of issues, try the following to resolve this:
Wiggle the clamps to ensure a proper connection.
Low draw: Certain vehicles such as lawnmowers, boats, ATVs, etc, do not draw power until the vehicle is being started or accessories such as lights are turned on. Try turning on an accessory to see if this draw turns the light green.
In cold weather or for vehicles that are more difficult to start (older, in poor mechanical shape, vehicles that have been sitting for extended periods, etc) it may be necessary to make a few start attempts. Crank the vehicle for no more than 5 seconds at time and allow the jump starter to cool off for at least 60 seconds between attempts. If the vehicle fails to start after trying 5 times, we recommend using an alternate method to get the vehicle going or consulting a mechanic.
If you have verified that all is in order but you still cannot get your vehicle going, a final option is to use the override feature. (Please see "IS THERE A WAY TO OVERRIDE THE INTELLIBOOST FEATURE IF MY VEHICLE IS HARD TO START?", in the "AFTER YOU BUY" section of our FAQs.)
How long does the RG1000 take to charge?
If your RG1000 has the Standard 15V/1A input, then you can expect it to take 3-4 hours to fully charge with the 110V wall charger, and it will take approx. 4-5 hours to charge with the 12V car charger with the vehicle running.
If your RG1000 has the Micro-USB charging input, then the charging speed will depend greatly on the USB charger you are using. Charging speeds are optimized when using a high power QC 3.0 USB port and our included charging cable. Charging times will vary from as few as 3 hours with a high power USB port to 24 hours on a low power USB port.
How do I charge my RG1000?
The RG1000 is available with 2 different charging options: Standard 15V/1A input or Micro-USB charging input. Please double check which charging option you have and follow the appropriate instructions below:
Standard 15V/1A Charging Input:
Step 1: Choose either 12V car charger or 110V home charger.
Step 2: Plug the charger end into the "INPUT 15V/1A" jack of the RG1000. Plug the other end of the charger into a wall outlet or 12V power outlet.
Micro-USB Charging Input:
Step 1: Plug the small end (Micro-USB) of the included USB charging cable into the input port of the RG1000.
Step 2: Plug the large end (Standard USB) into any standard USB charging port.
Do I need to register the product to qualify for warranty?
It is not necessary to register the product to quality for warranty.
However, it will be necessary to keep your proof of purchase (receipt) to validate your purchase date in the event of a warranty claim.
Registering your product speeds up the process as we would have your information and purchased date on file.
This way we would not need to request that info from you. It also allows us to keep you up to date on product changes and new products.
How long will the RG1000 hold a charge for?
With the RG1000 powered off and stored, the typical discharge rate is 1-2% per month.
For reference... a traditional lead acid battery will discharge at a rate of 4-6% per month.
Therefore you can pull the RG1000 out of your vehicle in 1 year and approx have 80% charge remaining, assuming it was left at 100%.
This is typically more than enough to boost your vehicle, even after a year, but to be safe and ensure you have all the power possible in an emergency, we still recommend charging the device back to 100% every 3 months, so that you have as much power as possible when you truly need it.
Will the RG600 or RG1000 with the bullet connector charging input (NOT micro-USB charging) work with a solar charger?The unit can be charged via solar, the key is ensuring the charging level matches or is compatible with what our input port (charging port) is rated for, which is 12-15V, 1A. We, unfortunately, don't know of a specific one that we can recommend, but as long as it has a tip that will plug into the "input" port on the unit, and can output power at 12-15V and approximately 1A then it would be fine.
Do you have any tips & tricks for charging the RG1000?
It is important not to leave the RG1000 completely discharged (10% or lower charge level) for extended periods, as this could cause irreversible harm to the lithium battery in the RG1000.
The RG1000 is designed to prevent overcharging, however, it is best to unplug the charger once the charge level reaches 100% for more than 1 hour.
The LED display on the RG1000 shows the battery charge level. To ensure accuracy, each time you turn on the RG1000 and press the "CIRCLE" button, the display will calibrate by first showing 2 dashes followed shortly after by the percentage of battery life remaining.
How do I use the voltage feature for the laptop charging?
Select the suitable connector for your laptop and have secured it to the end of the laptop charging cable and make sure that you have confirmed the charging/output voltage required by consulting the owner's manual or original charging cable for your laptop if you are unsure. Once you have done this:
1) Insert the laptop charging cable into the laptop charging port "OUTPUT" of the RG1000
2) Turn the RG1000 to "ON", then press the "CIRCLE" button. For safety, the initial output when turning the jump starter "ON" is always at the lowest setting (12V). Each short press of the "CIRCLE" button will toggle the output voltage from 12V to 16V to 19V. Please be sure that the correct output as determined by your laptop's specs is shown in the LED display.
3) Insert the other end of the laptop charging cable in the the charging port on your laptop. Once it is at the right setting and the laptop is charging, the “OUT” light on the display will come on telling you that power is now flowing.
Can I leave it in my vehicle in the middle of a hot summer or a cold winter?
The RG1000 can be stored safely in temperatures ranging from -22F (-30C) to 122F (50C). Note that, while it is safe to store the device in these temperatures, room temperature (72F) is considered optimal operating range. If at all possible, we recommend bringing the RG1000 to room temperature before using for maximum effectiveness.
Will the RG1000 work in cold winter weather?
Cold weather makes jump starting much more difficult, as not only do batteries lose their effectiveness, but turning your engine over is tougher due to stiff belts, thicker oil, etc. To optimize starting, we recommend bringing your RG1000 to room temperature before boosting. If this is not possible, you may find that the first attempt at jump starting will produce a weak output (turn over slow or not at all). This is normal, as when a lithium battery is cold, output is reduced. One advantage of lithium batteries is that they warm up fast from use. Keep attempting to start your vehicle (crank for no more than 5 seconds per time) as each attempt will warm up the RG1000 battery and allow more cranking power.

What is the size of the laptop charging port?

Do you have any tips & tricks for laptop charging?
Due to the sheer variety of laptops and laptop manufacturers on the market, we cannot guarantee that the unit will charge your laptop. In most cases it will, but in some cases it will only power your laptop. This is normal and is a limitation of the laptop's charging restrictions. We offer 9 of the most common laptop tips at www.ruggedgeek.com (also included with the RG1000 Safety Plus), but there are dozens of other tips on the market from other sellers that may be better suited for your laptop.
Our jump starters are equipped with a battery optimized for high discharge boosting of your vehicle and is a different battery composition that what your laptop came with. It is a great backup for your laptop, but it is not designed to replace the battery in your laptop. The RG1000 features a 39Wh battery, many laptops come with batteries that are 60Wh or greater, meaning that you should not expect the RG1000 to fully charge a dead laptop battery.
Will the RG1000 really put out 1000 Amps?
Yes, it will, in fact we have tested it well above that number. The actual output of the RG1000 depends on what the draw is from the vehicle you have connected it to. The advertised specs for the RG1000 are up to 7.0L Gas and up to 3.5L Diesel engines.
My USB device isn’t charging as fast as it should, why not?
There are many types of USB devices on the market and even more brands of cables on the market.
Not all USB devices are capable of charging at high speed. The speed at which your USB device can charge is determined by the USB device you are charging.
If your device can handle high speed charging, it will draw that, however many devices are restricted to 1.0A input.
The USB cable being used is also a factor. Certain cables cannot handle high speed charging.
If you do not feel your device is charging as fast as it could, we suggest trying a few different USB cables to see if that might be the issue.
How many mAh is the RG1000?
We rate the capacity in Wh as it takes out the variable of voltage.
The RG1000 is rated at 39Wh, 60C discharge. This is calculated using 10,500mAh @ 3.7V.
The reason Wh is a more accurate measure of capacity is that there are many products on the market with an inflated mAh rating.
They achieve this inflated rating by using a lower voltage than actual.
We use high-discharge, Grade A lithium cells in all of our jump starters.
Do you have any tips & tricks for charging USB devices?
When a USB device is initially plugged into the unit to charge, the LED display will briefly the current output level in Amps.
You cannot charge a USB device when the jump starter itself is being charged.
Be sure to use a quality charging cable that is compatible and recommended for use by the manufacturer of the device you are charging for optimal results.
What does the "circle button" do?
The circle button is used to:
• Turn on the display (once the power switch is on) to see charge level and status.
• Toggle the laptop output voltage between 12, 16 and 19V by pressing it quickly.
• Initiates power flow to the USB charging ports.
• Turn on or off the flashlight by pressing the button for 2 seconds. (Subsequent quick presses will toggle the 3 light modes)
Will the RG1000 charge my laptop, Microsoft Surface or Apple MacBook?
The laptop port is available on all 3 RG1000 variants. With the Safety Plus, we have included 9 of the most common laptop tips, but the laptop cable and tips are sold separately on the Standard RG1000 and the RG1000 Safety variants.
As there are so many makes and models of laptops on the market, over the years, we have included 9 of the most popular.
For the Microsoft Surface or Apple MacBook products, laptop "Tip G" is what is required, along with a device-specific adapter cable that has a 5.5mm x 2.1mm barrel. We do not sell these, but they can be purchased from other sellers at Amazon.com, Amazon.ca or at your local retailer.
Can I bring it on a flight with me?
Yes. Most airlines allow devices with batteries up 100-160 Watt hour capacity to be brought on flights only in carry-on baggage.
The Watt hour rating of our RG1000 is 38.9, so well within the allowable limits. We fly with ours all the time for battery backup.
As rules do change however, we recommend you read the requirements for the airline you are flying with before attempting to board.
How many times will the RG1000 charge my iphone or android?
This depends on the type of phone you have. Generally speaking however, you should get 3-4 charges of an average smart phone.

I’m having trouble charging the RG1000 Safety or Safety Plus with my cigarette lighter adapter?
More often than not the issue is that the cigarette lighter in the vehicle is not working.
Sometimes this is from a blown fuse in the vehicle or it’s a lighter port that is only powered when the vehicle is running.
In rare cases, some cigarette lighter ports in vehicles simply do not put out enough voltage to charge the jump starter.
This is rare and usually only the case when the vehicle is not running and the vehicle battery is low.
Can I use the air compressor in my cigarette lighter?
No. The air compressor has an EC5 power plug on the end which allows it to plug directly into the jump starting/power port of the jump starter.
This allows the air compressor to be very portable and used anywhere.
Are there any safety concerns with this product?
The INTELLIBOOST cables make this jump starter one of the safest on the market.
The power will not flow until the unit is hooked up correctly. It will simply beep at you if the cables are hooked up to the wrong battery terminal.
You no longer need to worry about the cables coming into contact with the metal on your vehicle either.
You can hook the INTELLIBOOST cables together once they are plugged into the jump starter and it will only beep at you in error.
Any worries or concerns previously associated with old school jumper cables have been eliminated. At Rugged Geek, your safety comes first!!
Will this work to charge my vehicle battery?
No, it will not charge a vehicle battery. RUGGED GEEK jump starters are designed to boost a vehicles battery in an emergency situation.
They will not charge the battery.
Will the RG150 air compressor blow up my big off road tire?
Yes, but it may take some time depending on the size of the tire. It is designed to inflate an average passenger car tire that is completely flat in about 7-10 minutes. Be sure to plan accordingly if you are using this on large, off road tires.
